Best practices of climate adaptation in the Waddensea

Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands are working together to protect the Waddensea as an UNESCO World Heritage site. Climate Change is one of the threats that the three countries are dealing with. Wing organizes a two day workshop for professionals involved to exchange ideas about best practices of the current trilateral climate adaptation strategy.

Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands adopted a joint Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (CCAS) for the Wadden in 2014. This strategy promotes a number of specific principles such as using natural dynamics instead of fighting them. The trilateral task group climate, consisting of public servants of the three countries, wants to evaluate the current strategy and is looking for good and inspiring examples from the three member states.

Workshop

Wing developed the workshop program, created and published the website and organized and coordinated the contributions of speakers to the workshop in close cooperation with task group members and the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS), the organization for the trilateral cooperation. Wing also chairs the workshop that will take place on 26-27 September 2017 in Wilhelmshaven.

Local developments

Wing proposed a program that broadens the view of the participants from a focus on nature conservation and flood defense to a scope that also incorporates the social, demographic and economic developments affecting the Waddensea area. Hence the current strategy can become more grounded in the local trends and developments. This is important asthe current strategy aims at creating overall and tailor-made solutions on both the trilateral and the local level.
